What is gold vermeil?
Vermeil is a French word, now commonly used in the English language mostly in America. It became a popular term in the 19th century as an alternative to the term silver-gilt. Vermeil is a combination of Sterling Silver with a layer of gold on top. To be considered vermeil, the gold must be at least 10ct and be at least 1.5micrometres thick. Any other metal plated onto Sterling Silver cannot be called vermeil. We plate our sterling silver with 22-karat gold and 2.5 microns thick.
What is blackened silver?
Blackened silver is sterling silver that has been through an oxidization process so that it turns black. It is not a permanent colouring and does wear off, especially when it gets wet. We do offer a re-oxidisation service for £5 for any number of pieces.
How do I look after my jewellery?
Many factors can influence the wear and tear of jewellery. Therefore you should make sure that your jewellery is properly cleaned, repaired and stored. Always protect your jewellery from sharp blows, scratching, chemicals, sunlight and heat/cold to minimise these effects, this includes perfume. Try not to get blackened silver or gold vermeil pieces wet as these finishes come off more easily with water. Ideally, store your jewellery in a soft lined box or pouch. The pouch we send the jewellery in is perfect for this! Try to keep pieces apart, so that they dont rub together or get tanggled up. To clean your jewellery, rub the piece gently with a soft lint free cloth. It is also recommended that you visit a jeweller once a year to have your jewellery cleaned professionally. This will keep them looking their best.
